Full Tour: CalSag, Tinley Creek and The George Dunn Trails

Keith Nowakowski cycling, family, hiking, lemont, mountain biking, outdoor adventurer's, photo, solo

Saturday I set out to see if I could do a combo of the CalSag, Tinley Creek and George Dunn Trails. This time I brought my friend Frank, figured someone else should enjoy the tour with me, or help if something breaks on the bike.

We set out at a steady pace ranging from 14-16 mph. The wind was steady from the south and it was getting toasty as well as humid, i.e. bring a lot of water. All went well, I’m getting to know the sections of the Tinley Creek loop and can make up time for the crossings. While we were finishing up the ride, we came upon two runners sitting on the side of the trail. We asked if they need anything, they said no, I said how about some water. They replied “Can you spare it?” We said “of course!” I gave them a bottle of water with Zym and they appreciated it. The experience reminded me of the kindness that I see on the trail, lots of hello’s and help when needed.

With that said, I thought I could bring up some thoughts on trail safety:

  • The pavement is showing it’s age and tends to break up on the outer edges where your tire could break free.
  • Always remember the shaded sections of the trail stay wet longer and tend to be slick.
  • Stay on your side of the yellow line, I see a ton of folks crossing the line, watch out.
  • Let folks know what you’re doing when passing, as well as don’t try to thread the needle on passes.
  • Bring plenty of water and know where the water stops are.
  • Watch out for deer. Yep, it sounds crazy, but these deer are tame and wander the trail, turtles too. The photo below shows one of those crazy deer. 🙂

I hope these tips help you to enjoy the trail system as well as minimize any accidents.

Have fun out there !
